Me, Myself and I To construct an understanding of my own learning style, values, beliefs, assumptions and knowledge, I need to become self-aware. Aware of my own class, gender, sexuality, age, cultural and ethnic background, and concious of my own culturally shaped values beliefs, perceptions and biases and how these aspects of myself impact upon my practice, how I relate to others and how they relate to me. As a social work student I am currently studying in Queensland Australia, I began my journey into social work many years ago, working as a residential care worker overseas in the United Kingdom. My culture and family of origin is of an english speaking Welsh background. Wales (Cymru) is a small beautiful country, widely renowned for it's green valleys, mountains, lakes, steam trains, slate and coal mines, choirs, people and incredibly long and seemingly unpronouceable place names. Wales although small experiences similar socio-econonmic situations to other western world countries. Lack of housing, lack of services, a decrease in local industry are common problematic socio -performance indicators. Wales as a whole experiences a number of social problems which impacts on the health and wellbeing of it's inhabitants. Wales is home to the second largest mountain in the United kingdom, Mt Snowdon. ![]() The Leek The leek is the symbolic metaphor that represents my professional framework, that is a visual display of my journey into social work and what I now bring with me this is a combination of my self-awareness, culture, knowledge, experiences, structural, organisational and professional influences. This is explained in depth and broken down into its various elements on the following page. |
